Grounding
When we're anxious, we tend to lose touch with the things that are going on around us. We become 'ungrounded.' Grounding is a way of paying attention to the things going on around us, and to our feelings and emotions at the same time. This way, we can help prevent feelings of anxiety becoming so intense that they become feelings of panic.
The more you practise, the better at grounding you'll become - we recommend you ground yourself at least three times each day.
Grounding has three stages - first, we pay attention to the things around us. Second, we pay attention to our experiences, and third, we pay attention to both at the same time.
When grounding, our job isn't to search for understanding, it's simply to accept what we're feeling and to let it go. Grounding takes about ten minutes, although with practise, it can take less. Click on the button below if you'd like to do a grounding exercise.
