Not all our thoughts are helpful. Our unhelpful thoughts are sometimes called 'irrational thoughts.'
When we're able to question our thinking, we're much more able to:
- Appreciate that our thoughts are only one way of 'knowing'
- Realise that our thoughts are sources of information to guide us, not ‘facts’ which must be acted upon
- Make changes to what we do as we’re going along (be flexible)
- Regulate how we feel
- Understand the minds and the emotions of other people
